My chain got stretched and made the lower sprocket slip! Does it need changing at intervals like a cam belt or is it supposed to last the life of the car? Do NOT turn crankshaft or camshaft with timing chain removed.

Local garage has confirmed the timing chain slipped and the valves hit the pistons - pictures below to prove this.

Stretching of the timing chain and problem with the tensioner. I do agree these rear timing chain system is ludicrous. Does it need changing at intervals like a cam belt or is it supposed to last the life of the car?
